Shoes are one of the most abused things we own. After all, it’s our shoes that have to go through all sorts of dirt and muck. With this kind of treatment, it isn’t a wonder that we have to buy new pairs of shoes all the time! Get your shoes to last longer by practicing proper shoe protection. Not only will this help you stretch out the lifespan of a pair of shoes, but it will also help you look like you’re wearing brand new shoes everyday!
1. Keep Shoes Dry
It is absolutely important that you keep your shoes clean and dry as much as possible. This is the number one key to preserving their life and making them look new all the time.
2. Store Shoes Well
How you store your shoes can make or break them. If you have the space, keep them in their shoe boxes and wrapped in some Japanese paper. If you live in a wet environment or humid place, put some silica gel packets in the boxes to help deal with excess moisture. If you live in a dry place, check on your shoes often and see if they need some extra moisture, which you can achieve by putting a small bowl of water in the closet.
3. Rub Leather Wax on Leather Shoes
Leather shoes have a number two enemies, moisture and dry weather. Either one can destroy them. Keep your leather shoes moisturized just right by rubbing leather wax on them soon after purchase. This will help the any excess moisture slide right off the leather, not affecting it. It will also help make sure the leather doesn’t crack from the dry weather.
4. Love Your Suede
Suede is one of those materials that need lots of TLC, and even more so when its on shoes! As soon as you buy a pair of suede shoes, use one of the many suede protectors available on the market to help protect it from wet stains. If they get wet for one reason or another, grab a towel to help you soak up the excess moisture right away and let it air dry. Also, learn the others ways to protect your suedes so as to make them last longer!
5. Learn How to Walk Avoiding Scuffs
Many times, our shoes break because we keep banging them on things or we keep making them go through the worst situations. While terrible weather situations can’t be avoided, keeping them bang and scuff free on a daily basis is easily done. Simply learn how to walk without hitting anything. Do this by always looking at where you are going and having a clear path at all times.
Try and practice shoe protection at least once a month. On a certain day each month, check on your shoes and make sure they are clean, dry, and mold free. If any repairs need to be done, do them right away to prevent further damage. Shoes that are well taken care of will last you a very long time. So ensure your investment and take care of your shoes!
